A recent government study found that 38% of adults and 12% of children use some form of complementary and alternative medicine, also known as CAM. Besides being used to promote wellness and vitality, complementary therapies and alternative treatments are also frequently used to address head and neck pain, arthritis, musculoskeletal problems, anxiety, and colds, as well as attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. Many CAM treatments such as acupuncture, massage and yoga are safe and without side effects. Some like nutritional and herbal supplements, however, can interfere with conventional medication. Inform your doctor of any alternative therapies you or your children are using so you can be monitored.
Complementary and alternative treatments can be expensive and are not usually covered by health insurance. Discount plans allow the consumer to seek alternative treatment and pay for services at a reduced rate. Always discuss any alternative treatment plan with your doctor. Related Links
