Toll of Recession: 4 Million More Lose Insurance, Need Coverage or Healthcare Discount Plan

The national unemployment rate has jumped from 4.4 percent to 7.6 percent in the past two years. Since the majority of Americans rely on employers for health insurance coverage, the increase also means that nearly 4 million Americans now lack health insurance. That number increases at a likely rate of 14,000 a day, according to a report by the Center for American Progress' Action Fund.

So what happens when insurance coverage is lost for healthcare? Discount plans, COBRA, Medicaid or a Children's Health Insurance Program are all options, but the report indicates that about half remain uninsured or uncovered by any type of plan.

Before the recession started there were an estimated 46 million Americans without health insurance.
