The flailing economy has the majority of Americans seeking prescription discounts in the form of generics according to a recent Harris Poll. Since October 2006, the number of American consumers who prefer generic prescription medications to brand-name medicines increased 13 percent, from 68% to 81%. During that same time period, the number of consumers who choose brand name drugs was cut in half. The trend of consumers seeking the less expensive option extends beyond generic prescription discounts to location of prescription redemption. Traffic in discount stores like Wal-Mart, Target or Sam's Club is up from 13% to 17% and online or mail order prescriptions are up from 11% to 15%. In relation, independent and chain drug stores have seen a decline in business due to consumers' efforts to save money.
