Nursing home residents and hospital patients look forward to visits from family and friends. Sadly, these visits can result in making the residents' conditions worse since they may be more susceptible to illnesses you bring with you. Follow these tips to keep everyone safe and healthy:- If you or your child is sick, do not visit. A telephone call, letter, or gift can brighten the resident's day.
- Many illnesses are spread from germs and bacteria found on your hands so wash well with soap and water or use a hand sanitizer before touching those you are visiting. Always wash hands after eating and using the bathroom. Consult with the medical/health care staff to see if the patient you are visiting has special germ-prevention rules; there may be other precautions you need to follow.
- Plan your visit. Check visiting hours and call ahead to ensure your visit will not interfere with any treatments or procedures.
- If you are planning to bring your child, check with the medical/health care facility to make sure there are no restrictions. Before your visit, explain what might be seen and answer any questions your child may have.
