Whether you're currently uninsured and in the process of requesting health insurance coverage quotes, or just trying to learn more about the millions of uninsured Americans, it's helpful to know how your geographic placement, race and more compares to others around the nation in regards to insurance. Here's a few facts to consider*:- The lowest rate of uninsured individuals is in the Midwest (11.4%), followed by the Northeast (12.3 percent), the West (17.9 percent) and the South (19 percent).
- At 24.1%, Texas has the highest percentage of uninsured, while Minnesota, Hawaii, Iowa, Wisconsin and Maine are the lowest.
- Fifteen states have a statistically higher uninsured rate than the national rate of 15.3 percent, while 29 states and the District of Columbia have statistically lower rates.
- It is evident that race plays a role when reviewing the number of uninsured. The current breakdown of uninsured by race is as follows:
- Non-Hispanic white: 21.2 million or 10.8 percent
- Blacks: 7.6 million or 19 percent
- Asians: 2 million or 15.5 percent
- Hispanics: 14 million or 32.3 percent
- American Indian and Alaska Native: 31.4 percent
- 34.4 million or 13.2 percent of U.S-born residents are uninsured
- 12.6 million or 33.8 percent of foreign-born individuals are uninsured
