Medical Tourism Discount Dentistry Not Worth It

The cost of dental work can be hard to shoulder for some families, and has caused many to seek out alternatives to the dentist around the corner in the form of medical tourism. However, while this type of discount dentistry does offer a huge price difference (70 percent or more), medical authorities in the U.S. encourage Americans to remember that it is an unregulated environment where unlicensed or second-rate providers face little or no oversight. It is much safer to seek out discount dental plans or negotiate a payment plan with your dentist before traveling abroad for work.

By one estimate, medical tourism has grown to be a $60 billion enterprise. For discount dentistry, Mexico has become the increasingly popular destination for U.S. citizens. Just over the border, the small town of Los Algodones, Mexico—population 4,000—is home to about 350 dentists alone, all established to serve foreign patients.
