During the recession, many families are cutting back on expenses, but some believe straight teeth are worth scrimping for. In a society that values appearance, orthodontics is seen as a necessity, not a luxury. The cost of braces may range from $4,500 to $7,000 depending on the severity of alignment. A supplemental dental plan may pick up some of the cost, but sometimes the entire cost is paid out of pocket.
Typically, there are 3 ways to pay for braces: pay the entire amount up front; third-party financing, often with interest; or in-office interest-free financing which sometimes requires a hefty down payment. In today's economy, many practices are being more flexible with their payment options and working with families. Some may waive fees for X-rays and dental records while some may allow down payments to be made in installments.
