Many forgo dental treatment, seek discount dentists

A recent Gallup-Healthways poll of more than 350,000 Americans found that 34 percent did not see a dentist last year. Skipping regular dental visits could lead to costly tooth and gum problems. Furthermore, if left untreated, oral diseases can lead to serious health problems. According to Matthew Messina, consumer adviser for the American Dental Association and a dentist in Cleveland, "Prevention's always cheaper than fixing problems later." Job loss and loss of dental insurance coverage are possible reasons for the startling results. For those with tightening budgets, other expenses come first.

The poll results were broken down by state. Mississippi had the worst results with 47 percent of its residents having no dental visits; Massachusetts had the best results with less than 25 percent having no dental visits.

Lower cost options like discount dentists are available. Some states offer clinics and programs for those who can not afford dental care. The Texas Dental Association runs the Texas Missions of Mercy where volunteer dentists go to underserved areas and treat patients. In Philadelphia, patients can receive low-fee cleanings from students at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Dental Medicine. Discount dentists may provide care in your area. If cost is an issue, talk to your dentist about modified treatment and payment plans and continue home care by brushing and flossing.
