Looking for a medical discount plan? Hospitals' Average Procedure Price Available Online

Posted: 06/22/09
If you're looking for the average surgery price or biggest discount, hospitals in California now have their sticker price available for all to see and compare. California state health officials recently launched a new website that lets consumers compare the prices of 28 common procedures at hospitals across the state.

From gallbladder removal to heart valve replacement, the site prices various procedures, informs users about the total number of procedures performed at that hospital, the charge per day and the average length of stay. The prices listed are what patients without insurance or Medicare are charged.

For example, a heart bypass costs $261,967 at California Pacific Medical Center, $274,023 at St. Mary's Medical Center and $144,2107 at the UCSF.

This new functionality is in addition to the tool already released that collects and displays hospital discount payment policies and free services. Both are available at oshpd.ca.gov.
