For the coming year, consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers has forecasted a 9% cost increase in medical insurance. Discounts often extended to employees by the company absorbing price increases are unlikely to continue for many. Of employers surveyed, 42% reported they could no longer absorb the extra cost and would increase employees' share of costs to cover the difference. The report attributed the large increase partially to the "use it while you have it" mentality. Many employees are worried about losing their jobs and are therefore seeking services before medical insurance discounts expire. Additionally, costs for private insurers are rising to make up for the revenue drop due to the uninsured population and Medicaid patients.
